Partial Destruction

Chechnya has a history of domicide at the hands of the Russian government. For centuries, Chechens have faced waves of violence, forced displacement, and cumulative domicide, which have profoundly shaped the Chechen psyche. Focusing on extreme domicide, the case begins with the 1944 deportation of the Chechens and ends with a description of the Chechen wars of the 1990s and early 2000s. This case offers an intergenerational history of the removal of Chechens and the destruction of their homes, a history that continues to shape contemporary Chechen and Russian politics.
